Hitting a solid fairway bunker shot is difficult and can be very intimidating for a lot of players. It is very easy to hit a fraction behind the ball and hit a fat, short shot. The extreme opposite is also a common occurrence of thinning it into the lip. You can hit these shots solid every time by just thinking of a few keys at the set up and throughout the swing.
Ball Back in Stance- The most important key in hitting out of the fairway bunker is that we want to hit the ball first. This is the opposite of the green side bunker where we want to hit sand first.
Twin Firm Mattress
So the first thing we want to do is play the ball more towards the middle of the stance, or even back of middle if you have a lofted club. This will help us to strike the ball first.
Hit Down and Through- Just like from the fairway, we want to still hit down and through the ball. A lot of amatuers will try to hit up on the ball and pick it clean out of the bunker, causing a scoop and hitting behind the ball. Don't worry about hitting up on it, just hit the ball first and let the loft of the club get it up for you.
Quiet Your Lower Body- You want to stay "quiet" in your lower body throughout the swing. In other words, don't move your lower body as much during the swing. This will help you stay centered over the ball and minimize the chances of you hitting behind the ball or topping it.
Take More Club and Hit a 3/4 Shot- Take a little more club and choke up on it, trying to hit a 3/4 shot. This will also promote solid contact and less body movement.
So there are some great keys to hitting a solid fairway bunker shot. It can be intimidating, but take the above tips and practice a little and you'll be more confident with fairway bunker shots in no time.
