Creating a Little Fisherman's Getaway

Whenever you redo a child's room you want it to be something special. If you have a little fisherman in your family, he would be delighted to have a bedroom that makes him feel like he constantly out at sea. Reminiscent of being on a boat, the little fisherman's getaway is sure to bring a smile to that special child's face.

To create this room, begin by painting the walls to look like the beach. Paint the top of the walls greenish blue and the bottom light tan. Use a sponge to paint small areas of white to mimic the appearance of waves. On the light tan, use a firm bristled brush to apply dark brown. Be careful not to press or drag the brush; simply touch the bristles, loaded with paint to the wall. The dots left behind will look like grains of sand. If you are very creative, it may be nice to paint a beach scene in the sand on one wall.

Look for stuffed fish at the toy store and then use wall mounting hooks to attach them to the walls. If you can't find stuffed fish, you can find wooden cut-outs in fish shapes at the craft store. Give them a fresh coat of paint and attach them in various places around the wall. By alternating their positions, it will appear that the water is full of jumping fish.

Next, make a trip to the local junk yard. You need to find an old wooden boat to complete your little fisherman's getaway. A flat bottom boat is the easiest to work with because you don't have to build a frame to prevent tipping. If you can't find a flat bottom boat, simply build a wooden frame on the side of the boat that will sit against the wall. Anchor it into the wall to keep it sturdy. If the junk yard doesn't have a boat then there is a good chance one of the guys working there can tell you where to find one cheap. A six foot boat will usually hold a twin bed and leave room for storage, but be sure to measure before you make a purchase. Remove the seats and place a layer of plywood in the bottom of the boat. Insert the mattress and some camouflaged bedding and your little fisherman will be thrilled with this surprise!

Finally, you should consider the floor. You don't want to walk into the room where everything looks perfect and then look down and realize the flooring doesn't match. Carpeting is very expensive but there is an easy fix for this. Buy a large rug. With the space that will be taken up by the bed a rug should cover most of the remaining floor. It will be less than half the price of new carpet and is easier to clean. Also the variety offered by rugs will add to the room. You could use a plain tan that matches the sand, a blue that matches the water, or find a rug with an underwater scene. After you add the rug, your little fisherman's getaway will be complete. Every minute of planning and work will be worth it when you see your child's face as he sees his new room for the first time.
